StarBugs One-of-a-kind English Literature & Arts Program By Teacher Maia

(一)
We will have some time each week to read, write and thinking about an interesting quote.
我们将每周阅读、抄写并思考一条有趣的名言,例如:

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
Albert Einstein quotes (German born American Physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity. Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. 1879-1955)

“想象力比知识重要得多。原因就在于知识仅限于我们现在已知或者已经理解的东西,而想象力则涵盖整个世界,以及那些亟待我们去认知或理解的事物。”

This class will facilitate student’s critical thinking development, bridging diverse mediums and inspire new ways of creating relationships through the study of art and literature.
本课程旨在通过对艺术和文学课程的学习来提高学生的批判性思维能力、跨媒体的融会贯通能力、激励他们探索建立人际关系的新方法。

I will ask of all students to keep a journal for the period of the class. In this journal they are invited to write their dreams, their ideas, draw as well as take note in class.  After each class, I will have them reflect on a question to be answered in their journal at home and prepare for the next class.
我会要求每一位小学员在课程期间带一本笔记本,用于记录他们的梦想和创意,涂鸦画画,或做课堂笔记。每堂课结束时,我将要求小学员们在笔记本上写下一个需要回家去解答的问题,并为下一堂课做好准备。

Creativity and well being are intricately interrelated.  Creativity flows out of one body with more ease if one’s body is healthy and when one’s soul feels deeply happy.

We will begin each class with 5-10 minutes of Yoga to wake up our minds.  Daily yoga helps connect one’s body and mind.

Critical thinking: What is imagination?

We will use the blackboard to create a visual map of all the words we can relate to imagination.

Learning to express ideas orally and in writing
学习口头和写作表达能力

Students are invited to write a short paragraph about one artwork from the website we will choose as a class.  Student will write a description of the artwork (in their journal), how the image makes them feel, what it makes them think about.
我们将一起从就上述网站中选出一件艺术作品,我将邀请每位小学员在笔记本里就该作品写一段话,描述作品,记录感受和感想。

Once students are done with their written description of the artwork, each of them will present their work in front of the class.  This is a good time for individual feedback in order to help each students create a more sophisticated description.
然后,每位学员将向全班同学陈述自己对该作品的描述。每位学员将籍此从其他学员那里得到反馈意见,并进一步润色、完善自己的描述。

As we learn about interesting words we will look at their etymology.  Etymology is the study of the history of words — when they entered a language, from what source, and how their form and meaning have changed over time.
随着我们不断学习到新的有趣词汇,我们将进一步学习词源。所谓词源学就是对词的起源的研究,即每个词首次进入到语言体系时是从哪儿起源的?如何形成的?其涵义又是如何与时俱进的?

4月27日教案

We will read the first chapter of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in
Wonderland'  Down the Rabbit-  Hole.

Once we have read the chapter, understood the new vocabulary, students
will be asked to find the answers to the following questions:

1/Why does Alice not like he sister's book?

2/What is the weather like at the beginning of the chapter?

3/Who is Alice following?

4/What happened to Alice when she drank the bottle with a paper label
with the words 'Drink me'?

5/What happened to Alice when she ate the very small cake with the
words 'Eat me', she found in a little glass box lying under the table?
Students will make a picture of Alice next to there answers in their journals.

The last part of the class will be dedicated to the introduction of
the famous UK music band the Beatles.  We will listen to their songs,
and sing the song.


Yellow Submarine is a 1968 animated feature film based on the music of
The Beatles. "Yellow Submarine" was recorded in 1966. It is also the
title for the soundtrack album to the feature film. The Beatles
themselves appear only in the closing scene of the film, with the
Beatles characters in the film voiced by other actors. In the film,
The Beatles try to save Pepperland from the Blue Meanies, who hate
music.

Creative Writing

Homework for next class: Write a short paragraph.

Invent an interesting character.  You will describe what your
character looks like, what is your character wearing.  Is your
character a person, an animal or something else?

Create a drawing-collage of your character.  Use different art
mediums, for example different kinds of paper, with different
textures, some cardboard, some silk, some fabric, some wool, etc.  You
will present your character on the following class.

Also find out the names of the musicians in the Beatle's band.

Introducing the Daily Yoga practice:

The ideas of in yoga are of unifying mind, body and soul in the cosmic one.

History of Yoga:  Some historians believe that yoga spans from 8000
years ago to the present day.  Yoga certainly started in India 3000 BC
with the Hindu Valley Civilization.

Vocabulary:
A historian is a person who explores, studies history.
Span: Referring to a period of time, from one point in time to another.
BC: Before Christ, before 2000 years ago, year 0.
Originate: come from, area, a place on the planet.
Boldness: action done which necessitates courage.

We will read together about yoga on the Internet with

I will help students understand the new words so they can achieve a
general understanding of the practice of yoga, where it originated and
what is it's goal.  We will read about the Hindu Valley Civilization.
Where did this civilization originate from? We will look at a world
map to find the countries we are referring to.

We will practice 5-10 minutes of Yoga.

Introducing the Journal:
I will ask of all students to keep a journal for the period of the
class. In this journal they are invited to write their dreams, there
ideas, draw as well as take note in class.  After each class, I will
have them reflect on a question to be answered in their journal at
home and prepare for the next class.

Students write the weekly quote in their journal.

What does this quote mean?  What is boldness?


I will ask students to write last weeks quote in their journal as a
part of their homework

individually in order to help each students create a more

First I will read the example to students.
For example:
This beautiful landscape is of the sea and a waterfall, big rocks,
green trees and a bright blue sky.  This image gives me a peaceful
feeling and calms my soul.  This picture also reminds me of a dream
because of the shapes in which the landscape is structured.

Once students are done with their written description of the artwork,
each of them will present their work in front of the class.  This is a
good time for student to exchange ideas.

We will read the first chapter of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in
Wonderland'  Down the Rabbit-  Hole.

5月18日教学计划

Beetle's class May 18th 2008

Yoga Practice: 5 minutes.

We will read the following quotes:

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is

Physics in 1921. 1879-1955)

Boldness has beauty, power, and magic in it."

(1749 –1832) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a very influential German writer.

We will take a look at the work of Julia Butterfly online.  Her dream
was to save a tree.
Julia Butterfly Hill (born February 18, 1974) is an American activist
and environmentalist. Hill is best known for living in a
180-foot-tall, 600-year-old California Redwood tree for 738 days
between December 10, 1997 to December 18, 1999. Hill lived barefoot in
the tree, affectionately known as "Luna," to prevent loggers of the
Pacific Lumber Company from cutting it down.

New Word
Environmentalism: any person who advocates or works to protect the
air, water, animals, plants, and other natural resources from
pollution or its effects.

Do you think it is important to protect the environment?

We will watch the video "Yellow Submarine" and "All you need is love"
on Youtube.com online.
Discussion about the videos, which one do you prefer and why?

Drawing a map of your dreams:  What are your dreams?  Students will
take some time individually and write down notes about their dreams
and hopes.  They will draw a tree in their journal and write words
associated with their dreams and hopes around their drawing.

Use your imagination to invent an interesting character.  You will
describe what your character looks like, what is your character
wearing.  Is your character a person, an animal or something else?

The goal of this work is to give the students an opportunity to be
creative  and deepen the level of sophistication of vocabulary  use
through the feedback done during the presentations of the work in
progress.  I will help students make use of more refined and precise
words.

For example, your character is a fairy with funny looking ears.  She
is small like a hummingbird, intelligent and beautiful.  She has the
power to make people's wishes come true. Most people cannot see her.
She lives in the most beautiful tree in the world.  This tree reaches
the heavens and has its root in the earth.  It is a very big green
tree.  In this tree there are many kinds of fruits growing so she is
never hungry.  Everyday she feels very happy   because her life is
peaceful.  At the beginning of the story the fairy is eating a
delicious sweet fruit sitting on a branch of the tree in the realm of
heaven.

Homework begin in class:  Create a drawing-collage of your character.
Use different art mediums, for example different kinds of paper, with
different textures, some cardboard, some silk, some fabric, some wool,
etc.  You will present your character on the following class.

Students will present their characters to each other during the following class.
